Should you test or use preventatives?
AAGI doesn’t routinely test greyhounds for exposure to heartworm because it is not currently an issue within the racing community. That may change as cases continue to increase around the valley.
If you live in one of the lake communities or in an area where you have issues with mosquitos then it would be wise to consult with your veterinarian about starting a heartworm prevention routine.
If, however, you live in a more desert community, or have not been troubled by mosquitos, it is likely an expense you can avoid.
Heartworm is dependent on the mosquito to transport it from one host to another so your greyhound is relatively safe in a non-mosquito environment.
