Agility, Obedience and Therapy

Fun Things to do with your Greyhound
Any Retiree is eligible for registration with AKC (American Kennel Club) by requesting an ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege). Which allows them to compete in all AKC events with the exception of Conformation.

Obedience
Greyhounds are capable of training and showing in obedience. They must be small dog safe, as they will be working closely together. You will be taught to teach you dog to sit, down, come when called, heel and stay on command. This establishes a very close bond between you and your dog and teaches trust in you as a pack leader. Dogs will be kept on leash during training.

Phoenix Field and Obedience has sessions at Encanto Park.

Agility
Greyhounds, being very athletic, enjoy doing agility. It builds self esteem and confidence for those shy dogs. You dog must be good with small dogs. You and your dog will be taught to negotiate the obstacles correctly for safety. You and your dog must be in good physical condition to avoid injury. This is a lot of fun for and your dog. There are several National associations where you can compete with you dog. These are NADAC (North American Dog Agility Conference), DOCNA (Dogs on Course In North America), USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association), and AKC (American Kennel Club). You can get more information from the training groups that follow.

Therapy Dogs
Greyhounds make very good therapy dogs. Your dog should be outgoing and confident. You will be required to take and pass a 15, part test. But don’t panic most Greyhounds won’t have a problem with the biggest part of the test. However a little obedience will help with the other parts. Greyhounds are not required to sit to pass this test. The benefit of certification is that you will be covered by insurance. You can visit the following websites for more information:
